Haier Aims for India's CTV Market Sep 15, 2004

Chinese durables and appliances firm Haier Appliances (India) is taking aim at India's CTV market.

T.K. Banerjee, president and CEO, Haier, confirmed that the company was finalizing plans to introduce CTVs in the domestic market by the end of September, The Times of Inda reports.

Haier's CTV range is expected to enter the 14-inch segment and go up to the high-end, 46-inch plasma category.

Haier India, the wholly-owned subsidiary of its Chinese parent, has followed a premium pricing strategy for the Indian market. According to Mr. Banerjee, pricing for the CTV category will be in line with the overall brand's positioning in India's domestic market.

Haier India has priced its products to cater to the mid to high-end segments. Earlier this year, Haier had restructured its marketing operations for increased independent focus on consumer electronics and appliances, in addition to bolstering its saleforce.

LG and Samsung currently control about 35 percent of India's 7.5-million-units-a-year CTV market, estimated to be growing at 12 percent annually. Onida, Sansui and Videocon are other significant players in CTVs. Within appliances, Haier has outsourcing deals with Whirlpool and Voltas. (The Times of India)
