Japan's Sony Corp. said it is aiming to keep its Vaio computer business profitable, a vote of confidence in a business that has given the electronics giant problems in recent years.

Sony does not break out separate earnings for its Vaio computer business, although analysts have estimated the unit has returned to profitability after years in the red amid intense industry competition with rivals such as Dell Inc.

Senior Executive Vice President Keiji Kimura told investors during a speech in Tokyo that Sony aimed to lead the computer business to profitability in the 2004-2005 business year, according to a Sony spokesman present at the speech. Mr. Kimura noted that the Vaio computer business was profitable in the previous business year ended March 31.

Mr. Kimura reiterated Sony's target for sales of 3.7 million personal computers worldwide in the business year to next March, up 16 percent from the 2003-2004 business year. The company expects 2.5 million of the total to be sold overseas. (Reuters)
