South Korean prices of digital televisions (DTVs) fell by as much as 50 percent in the past year, amid expectations that demand may pick up as the government endorsed the national digital TV standard, an industry source said.

The average price for 30-in liquid crystal display (LCD) televisions dropped to 3 million won (approx. U.S. $2,600) in stores from 4 million won to 5 million won a year ago, the source said. Consumers can now buy 32-in LCD televisions for about 4 million won.

LCD televisions with 17-in and 20-in displays are now sold at respective prices of 900,000 won and 1.1 million won, down from 1.2 million won and 1.5 million won a year ago.

The price of 40-in televisions with plasma display panel (PDP) screens halved to 5 million won from 10 million won a year ago, the source said.

Demand for digital TVs in South Korea is estimated at more than 4 trillion won, according to the LG Economic Research Institute. The figure is expected to grow further in line with a government plan to replace all analog television systems with digital broadcasting by 2010.

Electronics manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. also cut their digital TV prices, as the average selling price of screens are expected to fall further, analysts said.

According to DisplaySearch, a market research group, the price of 22-in LCD screens for televisions fell 11.8 percent to $635 as of the end of July, down from $720 in January. The price of 26-in LCD panels has fallen 30.9 percent to $734 during the same period, the researcher said. (Yonhap)
