LG Electronics Inc.'s digital television (DTV) subsidiary in the U.S. announced that it has licensed its patented DTV reception technology to Toshiba America Consumer Products, LLC.
Under the agreement, Toshiba becomes the latest in a list of companies to license the eight-level vestigial sideband (8-VSB) DTV technology.
LG's wholly owned subsidiary, Zenith Electronics Corporation, developed the 8-VSB digital transmission system, which is said to be at the heart of the ATSC DTV standard adopted by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission. The company claims it holds numerous patents essential to the production of over-the-air digital television receivers.
This summer marks the start of new FCC regulations that, over the next 3 years, will require 8-VSB tuners in virtually all TVs in the U.S.
