Report Says UK Appliance Industry to Experience Modest Growth Sep 1, 2004

According to a report from Research and Markets, the total market value in the UK for household appliances in 2003 reached GBP 2.7 billion (approx. U.S. $4.8 billion), an increase of 1.7 percent from 2002.

The report provides an analysis of the UK market for the white goods category of household appliances. According to the repot, the UK market is mature where only the categories of dishwashers and tumble dryers have potential to increase volume sales. The main opportunity to increase the value of the white goods market is through technological innovation.

The UK's largest sector by value is home laundry appliances and dishwashers, 37 percent, of the total market, according to the study.

The report indicated the UK has a substantial, and rising, trade deficit in electrical household goods, the only product category where exports exceeded imports in 2002.

The report stated the total UK white goods market is expected to enjoy a modest growth in value of around 1.7 percent in 2004, increasing by 6.5 percent between 2003 and 2008.
