LG.Philips Displays Co., said to be the world's biggest manufacturer of cathode-ray tubes (CRTs) for televisions and monitors, has unveiled a plan to start mass production of a thinner tube screen for digital televisions early next year.

The new CRT screen, SuperSlim, is 35-cm thick, cutting the size of traditional cathode-ray tube displays by 30 percent, the company said.

Seoul-based LG.Philips Displays, a joint venture between South Korea's LG Electronics and the Netherlands' Royal Philips Electronics, said the slimmer CRT display is expected to have an advantage over competitive flat-panel screens such as liquid crystal displays and plasma display panels given its better picture quality and cheaper price.

LG.Philips Displays said it has already begun producing 21-in CRT displays at its plant in Durham, Britain last December. In September, the company plans to make 21-in CRT displays at its plant in Nanjing, China.

Rival Samsung SDI Co. announced last month that it developed a similar CRT screen that is 35 cm in depth, which it claimed is the world's slimmest display. At the end of last year, Samsung SDI said it will upgrade its traditional CRT production lines to manufacture the thinner displays. (Yonhap)
