The Mexican Asociación Nacional Normalización Certificación (ANCE) has joined Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) in an Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI)-led effort to harmonize IEC Standard 60335-1, Household and Similar Electrical Appliances, Safety, Part 1: General Requirements.

Their participation will take place under the auspices of a regional standards association, the Council for Harmonization of Electro-technical Standards of the Nations of the Americas (CANENA). A technical harmonization subcommittee (THSC), responsible for the harmonization of the first part of the standard, will be formed at the next meeting of CANENA's THC 61D in September 2004. Members of THC 61D include the Association of Appliance Manufactures (AHAM), the Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI), UL, CSA, and ANCE.

Meeting with representatives of ANCE, Gerald Peck, from Lennox International, and Joel Solis, ARI certification engineer, stressed the goal of the ARI Laboratory Liaison Committee was to develop tri-national, North American standards, which are harmonized with IEC standards.

"The involvement of ANCE in the harmonization of the Part-1 Standard means the HVAC/R industry will, for the first time, be able to design equipment identical to IEC-based standards--meeting the electrical safety requirements of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico," said Peck. "IEC-based standards will allow our industry to more easily move into global markets and will likely increase our influence, as-well-as, the influence of UL, CSA, and ANCE in the international standards development community."
