Gateway PCs to be Sold at CompUSA Stores Aug 16, 2004

Gateway Inc. is expected to announce it will begin selling personal computers this week in CompUSA's network of 226 retail stores, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Gateway did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

The move, expected to be announced on July 16, would be Gateway's latest push into retail chains, after the Poway, CA, U.S.-based company closed its own network of 188 U.S. stores in April.

Gateway announced plans in the last month to sell its computers in Best Buy Co.'s 622 U.S. and 22 Canadian retail stores, as well as Best Buy's 109 Future Shop retail stores in Canada. It also sells computers through Costco Wholesale Corp. and Office Depot Inc.

Gateway plans to end the year with fewer than 2,000 workers, down more than 90 percent from its peak. (Reuters)
