Appliance and electronics maker Sharp introduced its first stand-alone display that features 3D LCD technology.

According to the company, the 15-in 3D display 3D images to the naked eye and can be switched between 2D and 3D viewing for standard applications.

Sharp says the display offers a realistic sense of depth and presence without the use of special glasses. It features 370-nit brightness and 500:1 contrast ratio, in addition to color management functions compatible with the "sRGB" international standard, a slide system for height adjustment, and a 90-degree swivel stand.

The company says the unit works by a parallax barrier light from the LCD that is divided so that different patterns reach the viewer's left and right eyes. The direction in which light leaves the display is controlled so that the left and right eyes see different images. When centered in front of the display, each eye receives the correct visual information for the brain to process, making it possible for the images to appear in 3D.

The new display is available now for U.S. $1,500.
