Electrolux Home Products says it is adding 700 new jobs to an existing plant in Springfield, TN, U.S. The plant, which manufactures gas and electric ranges, has hired 400 people and plans to hire another 300 by the end of the year.

The expansion would bring the total number of jobs to 3,600-3,700 jobs. The company started hiring people in May.

Plant workers, state, and local elected officials and area economic development officials marked the company's U.S. $28-million plant expansion with a tour of the plant and reception for Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen.

The Electrolux plant has been a fixture in town since 1962, when it opened as the F.H. Lawson Co. Tappan bought the plant in 1974, and Electrolux bought Tappan in 1980. The plant's employment level has more than doubled in the past 4 years.

Since January, the company has added 50,000 sq ft to accommodate new machinery and workers to produce Electrolux's new 30-in oven product line.

The 500,000-sq-ft factory produces household gas and electric ranges. Production at the facility has grown from 600,000 units in 1997 to 2 million last year. The new big oven line will boost production to 2.4 million units this year, making it the largest cooking-products plant in North America, said John Terzo, vice president of Electrolux's North American cooking-products division.

The plant intends to hire an unspecified number of workers next year as production continues to grow, he said. ''We will be the biggest in the world by 2005,'' Mr. Terzo said. (The Tennessean, NewsChannel5.com)
