The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturer's (AHAM) a research grant to study the disposal practices of refrigerator-freezers in the U.S through the association’s Appliance Research Consortium (ARC) and in coordination with the Alliance for the Polyurethanes Industry (API). The working title of the research is Disposal of Refrigerator-Freezers in the U.S.: State of the Practice.

This research builds upon previous research co-funded by EPA and ARC to assist in more accurately estimating the amount of foam insulation blowing agent emissions, which have high global warming potential, released from refrigerators and freezers when decommissioned. Coupled with previous research on the emissions of fluorocarbon blowing agents from refrigerator-freezer foam insulation to the atmosphere, AHAM says the research will provide valuable information in evaluating the impact of these chemicals on the ozone layer and their contribution to global warming and climate change.

Previous research showed that a substantial level of shredded and land-filled foam blowing agent is not emitted into the atmosphere and therefore, green house gasses attributed to refrigerator-freezers are far less than longstanding estimates.

"This research will be very beneficial to EPA, AHAM members, and the worldwide community interested in global warming and climate change," said Larry Wethje, AHAM vice president of Technical Services.

Once completed, AHAM says the research will be published and presented at an appropriate venue in 2005.
