Toshiba, NEC to Launch HD DVD Devices Jul 28, 2004

Toshiba Corp. and NEC Corp. announced plans to launch appliances in 2005 for High- Definition (HD) DVD, an optical disc which the companies claim can store six times more data than a current DVD, or digital versatile disc, and can record more than 8 hours of high-resolution movies.

In a bid to compete with Blu-ray Disc, an optical disc format being promoted by a group of companies including Sony Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Toshiba said it will launch HD DVD players and recorders in next year. NEC said it plans to release HD DVD drives for personal computers.

Matsushita Electric Industrial, which has developed a 50 G single-side, dual-layer Blu-ray Disc, said it will launch Blu-ray Disc recorders 2 weeks before the opening Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

In step with Toshiba's launch of HD DVD players, Pony Canyon Inc., an audio and video software developer affiliated with Fuji Television Network Inc., will release movie software in the HD DVD format in 2005. (Forbes)
