Whirlpool Appoints New Asia Pacific Marketing Director Jul 19, 2004

Raj Jain, managing director (MD) of Whirlpool of India, is moving to the appliance maker's Asia-Pacific headquarters in Shanghai in his new role as the region's marketing director.

The Asia-Pacific region includes India and China, considered the two fastest growing markets for white goods in the world. Mr. Jain will report to the Mark Hoo, chairman of Whirlpool, Asia-Pacific.

"Whirlpool of India's current chairman Garrick D'Silva will be the MD until a replacement is found," said Mr. Jain. Mr. D'Silva will take up his new assignment in the next 2 weeks, and an official replacement is likely to be announced in a month's time.

Mr. Jain joined Whirlpool 7 years ago as the executive director of Marketing and was appointed MD in 2001.

During his stint at the top, Mr. Jain is credited with expanding the company's product portfolio. He was instrumental in introducing air-conditioners, microwave ovens, and ranges.

"[The] market has been extremely competitive in the last four years, and Jain has done well to hold on to Whirlpool's leadership position in refrigerators," said a senior Whirlpool executive.
