Approximately 278 chillers previously operating on CFC refrigerants were converted or replaced during the year 2003 in Canada, according to an updated report from The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI).

The updated 2003 figure represents a 33-percent increase in conversions/replacements compared to 2002, the organization reports. This brings the total number of converted or replaced chillers from 1,274 (2002) to 1,552 and the rate of conversion/replacements from 23.2 percent (2001) to 28.3 percent.

The HRAI study, entitled "Determining a Baseline Number of CFC Chillers in Canada," was first published in July 2000. The purpose of the program is to provide an ongoing estimate of the number of chillers in Canada that continue to operate on CFC refrigerants as well as track the annual rate of conversions and replacements of this chiller stock in future years. "Chiller" is defined as refrigeration machinery having a centrifugal-type compressor, an evaporator, a water-cooled condenser, and having a capacity range of 100 to 1,200 tons.
