U.S. Presidential candidate John Kerry is blaming the recent mass layoffs at white goods maker Maytag Corp. (Newton, IA, U.S.) on current President George W. Bush's economic policies.
The company will cut 1,100 total jobs, including about 600 from its Newton headquarters.
"Mass layoffs like this shake even the strongest communities," Mr. Kerry said in a written statement. "I've visited Newton a number of times in the past year, and I know exactly how important these jobs are. Our hearts go out to the families left wondering exactly when and how these cuts will hit their community.
"Iowa's working families deserve a president who will fight for them every single day -- the way Gov. Tom Vilsack is doing right now -- and that's exactly what I will do as president…,” he continued. "I flatly disagree with those who have said Maytag should be moving these jobs overseas. American workers can compete with anyone in the world, and they deserve a president who will ensure an even playing field for them to do so."
Merrill Smith, regional spokesperson for President Bush’s campaign, said the Bush's "pro-growth policies are working in Iowa where the unemployment rate is 3.9 percent -- well below the national average -- but the president has made clear he will not rest until every American who wants a job can find one."
