Britian-based Dyson Ltd. is projecting sales of RM 1 billion (approx. U.S. $264 milion) from vacuum cleaners produced at its plant in Senai, Johor, Malaysia by the end of the year.

The company's deputy chairman Sir Richard Needham said that last year the company's bagless vacuum cleaners contributed about RM 600 million (approx. $168 million) to revenues.

He said that when the company started making the vacuum cleaners in Malaysia 3 years ago, its projection was to reach the RM 1 billion (approx. $264 million) sales mark only in 2006.

"We have to review our earlier sales forecast in view of the good demand for our vacuum cleaners in the international market," Mr. Needham said at the opening of Meiban-Dyson laundry manufacturing plant.

He said the company would produce 3.5 million vacuum cleaners by the end of the year, against 1.7 million in 2003.

Mr. Needham also said that Dyson was one of the world's top producers of vacuum cleaners and that te Johor, Malaysia plant supplied 10 percent of the global market for the product.

Mr. Needham said the vacuum cleaners had received good response from American consumers and commanded 15 percent of the U.S market.

"Our rival, Hoover, had to wait 150 years to have a 25-percent market share in the U.S., but we managed to capture 15 percent in less than 5 years," he added.

The newly opened RM 10 million (approx. $2.63 million) plant is a joint venture between Dyson and Singapore-based Meiban Group Ltd., which has manufacturing facilities in Malaysia and Shanghai.

Meiban President and CEO George Goh said the plant, which produces 4,000 washing machines monthly, had a full capacity of up to 12,000 units a month.

Mr. Needham said the company’s front-loading washing machine with two-drum wash action was the only one of its kind. (The Star Online)
