Haier to Launch Range of Products in India Jun 1, 2004

Haier Appliances (India) Pvt. Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Chinese white goods company Haier, is planning to enter the Indian market by launching models across various product categories.

Pranay Dhabai, director of Haier India, told reporters that the company has entered into strategic collaboration with Whirlpool and Voltas to manufacture refrigerators and air-conditioners for the Indian market.

Mr. Dhabi said once volumes justified setting up a manufacturing unit in India, the company would do so, in addition to putting up an R&D centre in India.

Worldwide, Haier has presence in 165 countries with R&D centers in 12 countries with global sales turnover of U.S. $9.2 billion.

The company is planning to sell its products through direct dealers and 'Planet Haier' outlets. It would sell products like air-conditioners, refrigerators, color TVs, washing machines, and microwave ovens.

Mr. Dhabi said Haier also has plans to use India as a production base for exports to South Asian, West Asian, and African countries.

The appliance maker had already made a soft launch in national capital Delhi last month. Mr. Dhabai said the products would be rolled out across the country in a few weeks time and that launch of mobile phones both in the GSM and CDMA segments were also in the cards.

Haier has plans to directly import high-end products into India. (PTI)
