Danfoss Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration Division has made a major investment to establish a commercial refrigeration laboratory in its North American headquarters. Located in Baltimore, MD, U.S., the new test cell is capable of testing and monitoring a variety of light commercial equipment, including vending machines, ice machines, glass-door merchandisers, under cabinet refrigerators, and other miscellaneous equipment. Danfoss says several units can be tested in the lab simultaneously.

Life-cycle testing is performed on refrigeration equipment at various ambient conditions. By monitoring and recording system pressures, temperature, compressor voltages, and power consumption, Danfoss can also perform efficiency testing in varying environments.

The test chamber environment is said to be precisely monitored with the ability to control both dry bulb and wet bulb temperatures. Dry bulb temperatures range from 40°F to 120°F and wet bulb temperatures range from 40°F to 115°F.

Investments include heating and humidification equipment, including two 3,000 watts electric heater strips, a steam generator, and a glycol recirculating system, which includes a cooling coil and a dehumidifying coil. The air circulates using two centrifugal fans, which can be controlled to produce 0 to 3,900 CFM.

For data acquisition, 70 type T thermocouple ports and 16 pressure transducer ports are used for logging and recording readings. A digital power monitor transmits voltage, current, and power readings to a PC. All data is streamlined to a PC outside of the laboratory where it can be monitored and from where detailed test reports are prepared for the customer’s evaluation.

The laboratory is working toward various certifications, including NSF, UL, and ISO 17025.
