The Whirlpool Corp. plant in Greenville, S.C., U.S. is preparing for its annual summer hiring program when hundreds of temporary workers will be added for 6 months of pre-holiday production.

Currently, the Benton Harbor, MI, U.S.-based white goods maker is planning to offer 350 jobs for the seasonal work in the second half of 2004.

Although the company has announced plans to spend U.S. $180 million this year in North America, no changes are expected in Greenville, according to spokeswoman Lisa Fell.

The temporary workers will help Whirlpool manufacture KitchenAid brand stand mixers, hand mixers, blenders, and large coffee grinders.

Ms. Fell said plant has been hiring workers for the 6-month season for the past 12 years. Wages are $8.50 per hour plus health benefits. The temporary workers are in addition to the 800 employees at the Darke County factory.

"In June we go into a period of higher production for the Christmas season," Ms. Fell said. "We would love to level out our production and not be so seasonal. But…we don't want to carry that inventory all year long when you just need it in the second half."

The Greenville plant makes more than 1 million units a year in all product lines, Ms. Fell said. (Dayton Daily News/Associated Press)
