Appliance maker Maytag announced it is laying off 110 workers from it's Newton, IA, U.S. plant. In February, the company laid off 170 workers. News of the latest cutback came as the company reported higher profits and sales for its first quarter of 2004.

Maytag spokeswoman Lynn Dragomier confirmed the layoffs, but said the company doesn't disclose numbers. "It's a business decision based on volume requirements," she said. The company reports its laundry business is up overall, but demand is down for models made in Newton.

Since 2002, nearly 700 workers, nearly a third of Maytag's workforce, have been laid off in the company's hometown. (The Iowa Channel)
