The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) has announced its support for the newly released third edition of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Electric Dishwasher performance test procedure (IEC 60436), which supercedes the previous edition, published in 1981.

AHAM says that an important reason for the third edition was the need to take into account the needs of all countries such as varying voltages and frequencies, different water supply temperatures, and water hardness, and availability of specified soils in the various countries.

The new IEC test procedure contains many significant changes, namely the following: An improvement in the reproducibility and repeatability of results by the introduction of a reference dishwasher; an alternate AHAM-type test load, an evaluation of dishwasher filter systems, and alternate food soil drying methods. Also, the standard has updated the formulation of the detergent and rinse agents to reflect currently marketed products. This revision represents a major change in the development of international performance testing of dishwashers with the inclusion of test methods beyond the traditional European methodologies.

This new international test procedure for Household Dishwashers was prepared by Working Group 2 of IEC Subcommittee 59A. WG2 was led by Ernst Grunewald of Whirlpool Corporation. J. Duane Tobbe of General Electric (GE) also played a key role as the Technical Advisor of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG), which was comprised of several manufacturers representatives, and other interested parties, such as the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

"The publication of the IEC Dishwasher test procedure marks an important achievement for the international standards community, and recognizes current technologies," Larry Wethje, AHAM's vice president of Technical Services, says in a written statement.
