Sweden-based appliance maker Electrolux AB announced it plans to build a refrigerator factory in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, employing some 3,000 people. The company had previously announced it planned to close its refrigerator manufacturing plant in Greenville, MI, U.S., next year and move the factory to Mexico.
Electrolux officials said they have purchased 500 acres near the Abraham Gonzalez International Airport in Juárez and plan to start construction on a 1.5-million-square-foot building later this year. Production is to start in 2005. Full production, 1.2 million refrigerators per year, should be reached in 2006, officials said.
The company said the initial investment would total U.S. $100 million, and that moving the plant to Mexico would save $81 million annually.
The Electrolux Group is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, and has 77,000 employees worldwide, including 20,000 in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Its sales in 2003 were about $15 billion. Sales in North America represent about 40 percent of its total revenue. The Ciudad Juarez facility will be the first Electrolux plant in Mexico. (El Paso Times, AP)
