Wal-Mart Keeps April Sales Forecast Apr 13, 2004

Retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said sales of Easter clothing and decorations beat its expectations, and it still expects April 2004 sales at U.S. stores open at least a year to rise in the range of 4 to 6 percent.

Wal-Mart had said last week that it expected April same-store sales to reach the lower end of its 4 to 6 percent growth forecast. On April 12, 2004, the small appliance retailer said only that sales were within that range.

Easter fell on April 11 this year, nine days earlier than in 2003, which pushed some demand into the March sales period. Wal-Mart had warned that the timing could make it tougher to deliver strong April same-store sales.

Wal-Mart said the U.S. Northeast and Midwest were the strongest regions, and it reported increases in both the number of shoppers and the average amount spent. (Associated Press)
