Japan's Sharp Corp. said it planned to invest 8.2 billion yen (approx. U.S. $78 million) in a new factory to make printed circuit boards for flat-panel televisions, DVD players, and other digital appliances.

The company said the new plant in Mihara City, Hiroshima Prefecture would begin construction at the end of April and be completed in December 2004 and will handle the development, design, and manufacturing of printed circuit boards.

Once constructed, Sharp's new factory will have a monthly production capacity of 4,000 sq m (4,800 sq yd) -- enough to outfit 1.2 million mobile phones with printed circuit boards. The company said it plans to double output capacity to 8,000 sq m during the business year starting April 1, 2005. (Reuters)
