Unionized workers at appliance maker Camco's plant in Montreal, Canada have ratified a new 3-year contract.
The Hamilton, Canada company said the deal included improvements to wages, benefits, and pensions. Camco is the largest Canadian manufacturer of home appliances, building dryers and dishwashers in Montreal, Canada and stoves and refrigerators in Hamilton under several brands including General Electric (GE), Moffat, and Hotpoint.
The company is 51 percent owned by U.S. industrial giant GE and 20 percent owned by GSW Inc. of Toronto, Canada.
Camco is shutting down its Hamilton plant by the end of this year, cutting about 750 jobs.
In 2003, the company also said it was expanding the Montreal plant, with a U.S. $14.9-million investment to meet increased demand for GE dryers. (Canadian Press)
