Canadian appliance maker Camco Inc. has negotiated a new contract with the union representing hourly and salaried workers at the company's plant in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The company said it had reached a tentative agreement on March 19, affecting the plant that employs about 850 people. A ratification vote is expected later next week. Details of the contract were not revealed.

Three years ago, Camco workers at Montreal plant went on a 10-week strike before a deal was reached.

"We are pleased that the company was able to come to a timely agreement with our Montreal union," James Fleck, Camco's president and CEO, said in a release.

Camco is the largest Canadian manufacturer of home appliances, building dryers and dishwashers in Montreal and stoves and refrigerators in Hamilton, Canada under the General Electric, Westinghouse, Moffat, McClary, and Hotpoint brands.

The company is 51-percent owned by U.S. industrial giant General Electric (GE) and 20 percent owned by GSW Inc. of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Camco is shutting down its Hamilton, Canada plant by the end of this year, cutting about 750 jobs.

Last year, the company also said it was expanding the Montreal plant, with a CAN $14.9 million investment to meet increased demand for GE dryers. (The Canadian Press)
