LG Electronics, Intel Partner on Digital Home R&D Mar 11, 2004

Consumer electronics company LG Electronics Inc. and business appliance maker Intel Corp. signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on research and development of digital home network technologies.

The deal will expand their alliance from personal computers to consumer electronics, displays and mobile equipment, according to LG Electronics.

"The two companies agreed to strengthen their partnership to develop home network technologies, solutions and next generation media equipment, and set up a new digital home standard," LG Electronics said in a statement.

By collaborating with Intel, LG Electronics, Korea's largest home appliance maker, hopes to play an increasingly important role in developing an industry-wide standard to ensure full compatibility between stand-alone home devices, computers, and other mobile equipment.

LG Electronics and Intel also hope to reach separate agreements to cooperate on displays and wireless LAN technologies, while LG Electronics wants to take part in home networking projects run by Intel's new Korean research and development center, said Lee Sang-wook, an LG Electronics public relations official.

The last deal reached between LG Electronics and Intel was made in August 2000 to share patent rights, according to LG Electronics. (Korea Times)
