Cell Phone Exports to Hit 100 Million in China Mar 4, 2004

China, the world's largest maker of cellular phones, is expected to export 100 million handsets this year, state media reported.

This will mark a five percent rise after mobile phone exports of 95.2 million in 2003, the Xinhua news agency reported, citing the Ministry of Information Industry.

China's position as the top producer of cell phones globally has been boosted by a strengthened position in the domestic market.

Local makers' market share hit 56 percent in 2003, up from just five percent in 1999, Xinhua said.

China is the largest mobile phone market in the world, with the total number of users reaching 276.8 million as of the end of January. (AFP)
