Cardiac Science, Inc., an Irvine, CA, U.S. manufacturer of defibrillators, has announced the marketing launch of its fourth-generation automated defibrillator (AED) that is intended to target hospital personnel, medical professionals, paramedic firefighters, and emergency medical technicians.

The company anticipates shipments to international customers and distributors to begin in May with sales in the U.S. commencing upon receipt of 510(k) marketing clearance by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The Powerheart(R) AED G4 is specifically designed to provide healthcare and rescue professionals continuous cardiac monitoring capability and decision-making latitude during the emergency treatment of victims of sudden cardiac arrest, the company said.

Product features include a color electro-cardiogram (ECG) display, manual override capability, continuous ECG monitoring, multiple rescue data storage, comprehensive AED and CPR voice prompts, IR database transfer, and an optional rechargeable battery.

The G4, which is priced at approx. U.S. $3,495, is said to weigh 6 lbs and includes patented features such as one-button operation and RescueReady(R) technology, which performs daily self-tests of battery, electronic systems, and disposable defibrillation pads, as well as configurable STAR(R) biphasic energy protocols and RhythmX(R) detection algorithm.

"From a business perspective this new AED will allow Cardiac Science, for the first time, to actively offer a competitive product to customers that require an AED to display the patient's electrocardiogram in real-time and operate in both a semi-automatic and manual fashion," said Raymond W. Cohen, Cardiac Science chairman and CEO. "We believe this product will be extremely well-received by professional users in both the international and U.S. domestic market."
