About 170 production workers at Newton, IA, U.S.-based Maytag Corp. are expected to be laid off on Feb. 27, 2004, union officials said.

Pat Teed, president of Amalgamated UAW Local 997, said Maytag apparently is scaling back production of some of its laundry equipment. "We're hopeful they'll be called back," the union president said.

Maytag company spokeswoman Lynn Dragomier confirmed the layoffs but declined to discuss the number of employees affected. She did say the cuts are not related to Maytag's announcement that South Korea-based Samsung Electronics Co. would manufacture front-load laundry products for the company.
