The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G), a leading U.S. coffee company, has introduced the Home Cafe(R) single-cup coffee brewing system, in collaboration with appliance maker Applica, known for its Black & Decker, Krups(R), Mr. Coffee(R), and Hamilton Beach brands.
Home Cafe will exclusively feature P&G's Folgers and Millstone coffees, and the appliances will be marketed under the Black & Decker, Krups, Mr. Coffee, and Hamilton Beach brands in a variety of designs.
Home Cafe features a pressure brewing system that is said to force hot water through the ground beans at high pressure, a technique commonly employed in leading coffeehouses, producing a single serving of coffee in about 1 min. The system uses individual pods containing a precisely measured portion of Folgers or Millstone coffee and makes one serving at a time.
The Home Cafe system will be available under the Black & Decker brand beginning in May 2004, with distribution expanding at mass merchandise outlets, specialty stores, and supermarkets throughout the U.S. The suggested retail price of Home Cafe starts at U.S. $59.99, depending upon the model and manufacturer, and the Folgers and Millstone coffee pods will have a suggested retail price of $3.99 for a 14- to 18-count pack.
