Nokia May Acquire Psion; Defends Safety of Its Cell Phone Batteries Dec 1, 2003

Nokia is considering acquiring Psion, its UK-based partner in cellular-phone-software venture Symbian Speculation, according to a Reuters report. News about this potential acquisition comes just as Nokia aims to fend off a challenge from Microsoft in the competitive market of making software to enable more sophisticated cellular phones - "smart phones" - that include e-mail, Internet access, and other high-tech features. News reports did not elaborate on how advanced Nokia's plans are to move on Psion.

In other Nokia news, European consumer interest groups and the world's largest handset maker, locked horns about whether the Finnish company's cellular phone batteries are safe, the Associated Press reported. Consumer groups in Italy and Belgium said an independent laboratory test they commissioned for batteries made by major mobile phone producers showed two types of Nokia batteries lacked safety valves to prevent overheating and fire in case of a short-circuit.
