Carrier Corp. announced that it will close its Warren County factory, TN, U.S. by the end of 2005, eliminating 1,300 jobs.

The plant, located in Morrison, TN has employed workers from Warren and surrounding counties since 1969. The plant's commercial air-conditioning and ventilation product lines will be transferred to Carrier factories in Tyler, TX, U.S.; Charlotte, NC, U.S.; and Monterrey, Mexico, the firm said.

"We will begin to move the production as early as fall 2004 and continue that move through the second half of 2005," spokeswoman Nancy Lintner said from Carrier corporate headquarters in Farmington, CT, U.S. "There will be notice for some people for as long as 18 months," she said, depending on the products they help make.

The decision is part of a broad review of Carrier's global production base, which has resulted in closing 22 factories during the past 2 years, with more than half of those outside the U.S.

Severance for Morrison employees will be negotiated with their labor union, but the company said benefits could include college scholarships for eligible employees. Sheet Metal Workers union officials did not immediately return calls for comment.

Carrier, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp., continues to operate a 2,000-employee plant in Collierville, TN, U.S. The factory is the largest residential air-conditioning plant in the world, according to Carrier, which has invested U.S. $18 million in the plant in the past 2 years.

"That is a very good plant and is important to Carrier," Ms. Lintner said. (The Associated Press)
