Electrolux Home Products announced that it is establishing a "Cold Products Technology Center of Excellence" at the company's refrigerator manufacturing facility in Anderson, SC, U.S.

The new center will research, design, engineer, and test refrigerators and food freezers for the North America market. It joins a network of similar Electrolux Group Centers in Italy, Brazil, Australia, and China.

According to the appliance maker, the center will focus on developing innovative products based on consumer and customer insights that support the growth of Electrolux's brand portfolio, which includes the Electrolux Icon(TM), Frigidaire, Frigidaire Gallery, White-Westinghouse, Gibson, and Tappan brands.

The new facility will be staffed by scientists, engineers, designers, and technicians and will build on existing engineering and test facilities currently at the Anderson site. In addition, the company expects that the new facility will attract top talent from other industries as well as other Electrolux locations.

Electrolux will invest an estimated U.S. $6 million in new laboratories, equipment, and facilities. It will be located in a newly constructed area near the current main entrance to the factory. Completion is anticipated by October.

Engineering for food freezers will also continue at the Electrolux Home Products facility in St. Cloud, MN, U.S.

"The new Cold Products Technology Center of Excellence is an important step forward for Electrolux," said Robert Cunningham, vice president, Refrigerators and Food Freezers. "Assembling primary development, industrial design, testing and engineering assets in a high-tech facility prepares Electrolux to expand our leadership role in this extremely important product area. Locating it in Anderson where it is integral with our manufacturing allows rapid translation of concepts into finished products."

The center staff will initially add 35 to 40 jobs in the first year, and additional jobs will be added as it is completed, bringing employment at Anderson to more 1,600.

"The new facility and additional high tech staff will give Electrolux a development and technical resource second to none in our industry," said Tom Thompson, vice president of Engineering, who will oversee the center. "A steady flow of the latest and best new products is critical to the future of Electrolux. The facility in Anderson will be a competitive advantage for Electrolux."
