South Korea is expected to overtake Japan to become the world's top producer of plasma display panels (PDPs) during the first half of next year, according to an industry report.
Display marketing agency Display Bank said the combined PDP output by South Korea's three major manufacturers -- Samsung SDI, LG Electronics, and Orion PDP -- is projected to more than double to 464,000 units a month by the end of the first half of 2005.
The nation's monthly PDP output, measured using a 42-in screen size standard, currently stands at 224,000 units.
In contrast, Japan's top PDP makers -- FHP, Matsushita Electric Industrial, Pioneer, and NEC -- are expected to raise their combined monthly output to just 407,000 units by the end of the first half of next year. At present, Japan produces 247,000 units, staying slightly ahead of South Korea.
By company, Samsung SDI is to expand its monthly output from the current 131,000 panels to 251,000 early next year, while LG Electronics' output capacity is set to grow to 208,000 units per month in 2005. (Yonhap)
