Sony Corp. and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. have announced they will spend 120 billion yen in fiscal 2004 to boost output of new types of semiconductors used for next-generation digital home appliances.

The sum represents a 60-percent increase from the estimated 73 billion yen allocated for similar investment by the Sony group in the current year through March 31, 2004.

Sony said in April last year it plans to invest about 200 billion yen during a 3-year period, from fiscal 2003 to develop a high-performance microchip called Cell, which is said to be capable of processing visual images at a high speed. (Kyodo News)
