Appliance maker Electrolux AB (Stockholm, Sweden) says it will wait 1 week before announcing whether it plans to close its refrigerator plant in Greenville, MI, U.S. The facility originally was scheduled to close Jan. 9.

The plant, about 30 miles northeast of Grand Rapids, MI, U.S., has about 2,700 workers. Electrolux said it costs the company about U.S. $81 million per year to keep the plant going. The option is to move production to Mexico.

Spokesman Tony Evans said the company feels the decision requires more time after receiving the city's incentive package. But he said the offer was still well below the annual shortfall.

The company, the world's largest maker of household appliances, owns brands such as Frigidaire, Electrolux, and Weed Eater. (Chicago Tribune)
