Jack W. Shilling, executive vice president of Allegheny Technologies Inc., has been named chairman of the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA), a Washington, DC, U.S.-based trade association representing producers of specialty steels such as high technology, high value stainless and other specialty alloy products.

Dr. Shilling succeeds Paul A. Kelly, president and CEO of Slater Steel, Inc., whose tenure as chairman ended on Dec. 31, 2003.

Dr. Shilling recently was appointed executive vice president, Corporate Development and CTO of Allegheny Technologies Inc. (ATI). He is responsible for ATI's strategic growth opportunities, technology development, and other key technical matters. He joined Allegheny Ludlum Corporation, an Allegheny Technologies company, in 1973 as a research specialist. After several years with the company, Dr. Shilling was named president of Allegheny Ludlum in 1998. In 2000, he became president of ATI's High Performance Metals segment.

Dr. Shilling received his Ph.D. in metallurgical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh; M.S. in physics from Cornell University; and B.A. in physics from Franklin & Marshal College.
