Sharp Corp. said it is considering boosting production capacity at its new liquid crystal display (LCD) panel plant next year in Mie, Japan.

Sharp has already allocated Y100 billion (approximately U.S. $9.3 million) for the LCD panel line using glass substrates for television use. The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported the company will spend an additional Y90 billion (approximately $8.4 million) in the spring to triple the planned production capacity for LCD panels at the new plant.

Sharp hopes to keep its leading position in the fast-growing market for LCD panels for use in flat-screen TVs amid growing competition from rivals including South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co.

The company expects the global LCD TV market to jump to 12 million units in the year ending March 2006 from its estimation of 3 million units in the current year through March. In 2002, Sharp had a share of more than 50 percent of the global LCD TV market.

Sharp plans to process 15,000 glass substrates monthly at the new line, which may enable it to produce up to 120,000 30 in LCD panels. The company also plans to make 100,000 30 in LCD TVs monthly at the new plant. (Dow Jones)
