Gillette Sues Remington Over Electric Razor Technology Dec 12, 2003

Gillette Co. has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Rayovac Corp.'s Remington Products unit for using Gillette's cleaning system technology for electric razors.

Gillette of Boston, MA, U.S. alleges that Remington's new Titanium Smart System infringes on patents owned by its Germany-based electric shaver unit, Braun.

Braun's latest technology for the cleaning and recharging system for a dry shaving electric razor is known as the Syncro System Smart Logic.

Gillette says the Braun Syncro shaver is the world's top-selling electric razor.

The civil complaint, filed Dec. 3, 2003 in U.S. District Court in Boston seeks a preliminary injunction to stop the sale of the Remington product. It does not ask for damages.

Eric Kraus, Gillette corporate spokesman, said, "We feel that Remington is violating two of our patents of our highly successful dry shaving business. We are vigorously defending our intellectual property."

This is not Gillette's only recent patent infringement suit. It filed a suit on Aug. 12, 2003, seeking to stop the sale of Energizer Holdings Inc.'s Schick-Wilkinson Sword unit's Schick Quattro razors, alleging they infringe on Gillette's Mach3, Mach3Turbo, and Venus shaving systems. (Dow Jones)
