Japan's Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. said that its Chinese subsidiary will expand its production of plasma display panels amid increasing global demand for plasma TVs.

Shanghai Matsushita Plasma Display (SMPD) Co. has recently boosted its monthly production capacity to 20,000 units from the previous 5,000 units, it said.

Matsushita Electric holds a 51-perdent stake in the subsidiary, while the remaining 49 percent is held by local Chinese companies.

Matsushita said the Chinese unit aims to capture a 40-percent share in the Chinese market, where demand for plasma TVs is expected to reach 300,000 in 2005. (Dow Jones)
