The Instituto Mexicano de Seguro Social, a Mexican Government healthcare agency, awarded GE Medical Systems a contract to install and service 80 new mammography systems, the largest mammography order in GE history, the medical appliance maker said.

According to the U.S. $23 million contract, GE will provide two types of mammography technologies to hospitals and medical clinics across Mexico -- digital mammography and conventional mammography. The combination of these systems will provide a new level of support to physicians throughout the patient care process -- from screening to diagnosing to treating breast cancer, GE said.

GE's digital mammography CAD software, and review workstation solution, featured as part of its Senographe 2000D digital mammography system, reportedly reduces exam times by approximately 50 percent and allows doctors to review images within seconds of the exam.

GE's conventional mammography system, the GE Alpha RT, will also support a full range of screening and diagnostic exams. The Alpha RT's image quality, compact design, and ergonomics are said to make it easy for technologists to operate and provide a more comfortable exam for patients.

"We are honored that GE's mammography systems and services were chosen to support the fight against breast cancer in Mexico," said Srini Seshadri, general manager, Global X-ray at GE. "Our systems apply the world's most advanced medical imaging and computing technologies to produce extremely detailed images of the breast, which enable physicians to provide the very best care to their patients."

With the installation of the new GE mammography systems, approximately 2,000 patients every day will have access to the technologies for their exams.
