Sony to Recall CD Walkman Battery Packs Nov 20, 2003

Sony Corp. is recalling about 550,000 external battery packs for its CD Walkman worldwide because of a defect in the connector cord that could cause the pack to heat up and partially melt.

A Sony spokeswoman said there had been one reported instance of the battery pack damaging the CD player's nylon carrying case.

Sony said it could not give an estimate for the total cost of the recall, which it was still assessing.

The spokeswoman said the battery packs were supplied by an Indonesian parts maker and that the CD Walkman itself had no defects.

The battery packs came with four CD Walkman models -- D-NE1, D-NE9, D-EJ985 and D-EJ885 -- released between October 10, 2002 and April 2003.

The recall includes 330,000 battery packs sold in Japan. (Reuters)
