JVC America, Inc. has announced it will shut down its VHS tape production plant in Tuscaloosa, AL, U.S. by Jan. 31, 2004.

About 115 people will be laid off from the plant closing, said Brad Springer, vice president of
Finance and Administration. He said JVC would provide severance packages and outplacement services for those laid off.

The plant opened in October 1986 to produce VHS cassettes and tape. Mr. Springer said the loss of the VHS market to DVDs forced the plant to shut down.

The company has compact disc and DVD plants in Tuscaloosa, AL, U.S. and Kennesaw, GA, U.S. that employ about 550 employees. (Associated Press)
