The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) has announced that for the first time, a non-manufacturer was elected to its Executive Board. Tom Callahan, president of Sawyers Control Systems, a home electronics integration company, became the new TechHome Division Chair and a member of the CEA Executive Board. Another integrator, Sean Fields, president of Audio/Video Entertainment Inc., was re-elected to serve on CEA Board of Directors. Kathy Gornik, president of Thiel Audio Products Co., and Loyd Ivey, chairman and CEO of Mitek Corp., also were re-elected to serve as chair and vice chair of CEA's Executive Board.

The volunteer leaders were elected during CEA's annual product division and Board of Directors meetings held in Carlsbad, CA, U.S., the week of Oct. 13, 2003. The new board members will assume their leadership positions on Jan. 1, 2004.

In addition to Mr. Callahan, other new Executive Board members include:

  • Mike O'Neal, chair of CEA's Accessories Division and president and CEO of Gemini Industries
  • Gary Warzin, chair of CEA's Audio Division and president of Audiophile Systems Ltd.
  • Peter Fannon, chair of CEA's Video Division and vice president of technology policy and regulatory affairs for Panasonic/Matsushita Electric Corp. of America.

"Our membership continues to expand, encompassing not only manufacturers but also integrators, retailers, content creators and communications companies," commented Gary Shapiro CEA president and CEO. "Earlier this year, we announced that we now have more broadcasters as members through our DTV Subdivision than the National Association of Broadcasters. Integrators are another essential player in the consumer electronics industry, and with our TechHome Division, we're now have 270 integrators as members. I am pleased to see our Board reflect this growth in our membership and in our industry."

"Our volunteer leadership is on of our association's strongest strategic asset. Our volunteers provide the input, constructive criticism, insights and leadership necessary for us to continue to serve the needs of our industry," Mr. Shapiro continued. "From industry promotions, to standards activities, to training to promoting the industry's policy agenda, CEA works on behalf of the industry 365 days a year."

CEA membership is currently split into seven main divisions: accessories, audio, home networks and information technology, mobile electronics, TechHome, video, and wireless.
