Sales of Digital TVs Boom in Korea Oct 8, 2003

In Korea, digital TVs accounted for nearly 70 percent of all TV sales at home and abroad as of the end of August, according to the Electronic Industries Association of Korea (EIAK).

Digital TVs took up 716.5 billion won (U.S. $622.63 million), or 69 percent of total domestic color TV sales, sharply up from last year's 52 percent, EIAK officials said Wednesday.

Exports of digital TVs also rose sharply due increasing demand for PDP and LCD TVs abroad, accounting for 66 percent of the total TV shipments over the same period.

By the end of this year, industry observers said, digital TVs will exceed 70 percent of the total TV sales for the first time.

LG Electronics Inc. reported that its digital TV sales skyrocketed as much as 200 percent year-on-year.

"The growth of digital TVs is faster than expected, and in two or three years' time, the amount of sales will far exceed those of conventional color TVs," one industry official said. (Asia Pulse, Yonhap)
