Almost 5,600 Sony Corp. laptop computers and 35,000 gas-grill components were being recalled by the manufacturers because of safety concerns, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

Users of nearly 5,600 Sony Vaio notebooks could receive a mild electric shock when the computer is connected to a telephone line and the phone rings. However, no incidents were reported, the government agency said.

All the modems of the notebooks sold between June and July 2003 with model numbers PCG-FRV25 and PCG-FRV27 should be disconnected from the phone line, CPSC said.

Sony will provide a free repair of the China-made notebooks and extend the current limited warranty to two years from the date of purchase. Customers may contact Sony at +800/880-9743 or www.sony.com/pcsupport.

The commission also announced the recall of 35,000 American-manufactured gas regulators made for Char-Broil, Kenmore, and Thermos brand gas grills.

The maker, Marshall Gas Controls, discovered that the device that controls gas pressure can also leak a highly flammable propane gas. The company has accounted for 23,000 regulators thus far, said a spokesman for Marshall Gas Controls.
