The North American Association of Food Equipment Manufacturers (NAFEM) announced the completion of an industry standard that allows independent pieces of commercial foodservice equipment to communicate with a computer. Known as the NAFEM Data Protocol, this all-industry standard is available to the industry via the association’s web site: www.nafem.org.

The NAFEM Data Protocol gives foodservice operators access to timely information that helps them run their businesses more effectively and efficiently by allowing them to better manage their inventory, assets, labor, and energy. It also provides valuable data in the area of food safety.

Having access to this type of information at a moment’s notice offers the operator a number of benefits, including the ability to:
· Automate maintenance and service schedules
· Create trouble-shooting and diagnostic capabilities
· Reduce equipment downtime
· Improve utility management costs
· Maximize product quality
· Increase food safety
· Monitor trends and collect historical, real-time information
· Reduce frustration associated with unscheduled downtime.

"Successful foodservice operations need real-time information on a consistent basis," said Mike Carpenter, CFSP, NAFEM president and president, AMCO Smallwares, a Division of Focus Foodservice. "The NAFEM Data Protocol provides operators and manufacturers with the informational tools necessary to meet customer needs."

The Association also recognized recognized Lawrence P. Moon, CFSP, chairman and chief executive officer, Lakeside Manufacturing, Inc., Milwaukee, WI, U.S., with its 2003 President’s Award. The presentation took place during the NAFEM Show, Sept. 6, in New Orleans, LA, U.S.

The award recognizes a non-elected NAFEM volunteer who has worked tirelessly on behalf of the association. Mr. Moon, an active NAFEM member and volunteer for more than 15 years, has made countless contributions through committee work in the areas of education, finance, and technology. He currently chairs the association’s Information Technology Advisory Council and has spearheaded industry barcoding efforts.

In addition, Bernard G. Steever, CFSP, retired president of Middleby Worldwide, received the 2003 William W. Carpenter Award.

Mr. Steever has served on numerous NAFEM committees, on the board of directors, and as an officer, capping his 17 years of NAFEM service as president in 1995.

A part of the foodservice equipment and supplies community for 43 years, he began his career as a blue print boy for Southern Equipment Company in St. Louis, MO, U.S. He held a variety of positions, such as draftsman, design engineer and supervisor of engineering-ventilation systems. By 1975 he was named national sales manager. In 1989, the company was aquired by Middleby Corporation upon which Mr. Steever was promoted to vice president of sales and market development and then to president of Middleby Worldwide, the position he held until his retirement in 2000.

The William W. Carpenter Award, the association’s highest honor, recognizes an individual who has dedicated their life to NAFEM and the foodservice equipment and supplies industry.
