Sharp Corporation (Osaka, Japan) and Sharp Laboratories of America (Camas, WA, U.S.) announced that Jack Van Oosterhout has been promoted to the position of president and chief executive officer. Prior to his promotion, Mr. Van Oosterhout served as vice president of the digital imaging systems department at Sharp Labs.
According to the company, the appointment of Mr. Van Oosterhout marks a milestone in the lab's eight-year history, as the lab aims to broaden its mission beyond its original mandate to develop technologies that improve Sharp Corporation's products available in the U.S. Mr. Van Oosterhout will lead the lab in pursuit of new opportunities to adapt Sharp's products to the U.S. market, and to identify new product categories where Sharp Corporation can succeed long-term, said the company. He assumes the responsibilities of Jon Clemens, Ph.D., who is retiring after his tenure at Sharp Labs that included building the lab from its founding.
As one of the original members of Sharp Labs, Mr. Van Oosterhout was responsible for founding the digital imaging systems department, whose applied research has made significant contributions to Sharp Corporation, the company said. To support his department's research and development initiatives, Mr. Van Oosterhout also founded the lab’s software development subsidiary in India to increase development capacity and reduce cost.
Prior to joining Sharp Labs, Mr. Van Oosterhout served as director of software and technology at CalComp Inc., where he led the research and development of new software and technology initiatives for the company's printing and imaging lines.
Mr. Van Oosterhout's appointment was effective Sept. 1, 2003.
