Philips to Launch Two Handsets in 4Q Sep 5, 2003

Philips will launch two new handsets in the coming quarter, aiming to snatch a 3-percent market share in Taiwan by year-end.

Bryan Yao, business manager of wireless telecommunications at Philips Taiwan, said the 530 will be available in October and the 350 color handset in November.

The 530 features an external VGA camera, which can be rotated 360 degrees, a 65,000-color TFT LCD panel and MMS, Java and Bluetooth support. The 350 will be positioned to target the mid-range to low-end market, Mr. Yao said.

Philips in June launched two handset models – the 330 and 630 – in Asia and Europe. Combined monthly shipments have reached close to 20,000 units, Mr. Yao said.

Philips is the No. 9 handset vendor in Taiwan, with about a 2.5-percent market share. The top five vendors are Nokia, Motorola, OKWAP (branded by Inventec Appliances), Samsung Electronics and BenQ. It is estimated that Taiwanese consumers will purchase about 7 million handsets this year. (DigiTimes.com)
